Throughout history the majority of homes have been built with a slight pitch to the roof as it was considered the best way of preventing a buildup of water and/or snow on the top of the house which could often result in a leak. With some of the more modern technologies, a flat roof is less likely to fail, therefore providing a different dimension to your property and it can add additional space. Previously flat roofers would use asphalt to cover the roof, but found that it was far from a permanent solution. Modern designs however, allow flat roofers to install a roof made from a variety of materials that vary according to the climate in which you live.
Today flat roofs include materials such as copper, asphalt, rubber, fiberglass and green roofs, which all have benefits and negatives. The most recommended products for use by flat roofers are those known as GRP (glass reinforced plastic roofs) or EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer). For flat roofs the GRP is the wisest choice for materials used because it is tough and durable. A flat roof constructed of GRP is maintenance free, weather resistant, fire proof and friendly to the environment. The installation has no joints or seams and can be used on flat roofs as well as balconies, valleys, dormers or box gutters.
GRP is also called fiberglass and is made from glass fibers that are held together with layer upon layer of a polyester plastic or resin. The materials harden after they have been cured and become so tough that it cannot be cut with a knife. After curing the materials they become an extremely tough material that can be shaped to any size, thickness and is available in any colour. The material can be shaped according to any design the customer has a request for, making it the perfect option for not only flat roofs but balconies as well. The products used are safe and durable when used in high traffic areas without the risk of leaks.
Hartseal uses TOPSEAL fibreglass roofing products for flat roofs which are under strict production control through the factory which requires random and mandatory inspections of the site to guarantee the product’s perfection. Flat roofers who use TOPSEAL products must be certified through the BBA. This is assurance that the product used meets all requirements to ensure the product’s consistency as well as the process throughout installation. When hiring a flat roofer it is important to ensure they are TOPSEAL approved contractors and licensed to install the products. The TOPSEAL products are approved by the BBA (British Board of Agreement), which means the customer will have satisfaction in knowing their flat roof will be installed with the highest standards.
